Focused Inbox is a feature of Office 365 introduced to help organize mail. It separates your inbox into Focused and Other with Other serving a function similar to the Clutter Folder. The following guide will instruct you on how to turn these features on and off.

Turn Off Clutter

You need to turn on Clutter in Outlook on the web so that you can use it both in Outlook on the web and Outlook.

  1. Sign in to Outlook on the web. For help, see Sign in to Outlook on the web.

    Note: You can't turn on Clutter in the light version of Outlook on the web. You can switch, however, to the full version by navigating to Options > General > Light version and clear the Use the light version of Outlook on the web check box.

  2. In the upper-left corner of the page, choose the App launcher The app launcher icon in Office 365 > Outlook.

  3. On the navigation bar, go to Settings > Options > Mail > Automatic processing > Clutter.

  4. Choose Separate items identified as Clutter > Save Save .

  5. Notes: 

    • You can turn off Clutter anytime by selecting Don't separate items identified as Clutter.

    • The Clutter folder remains in Outlook even after you turn off the feature.

NOTE: You may not see these options if you do not have a clutter folder.

Turn ON/OFF Focused Inbox

Outlook 2016

  1. Select the View tab.

  2. Select Show Focused Inbox.

    The Focused and Other tabs will disappear from the top of your mailbox.

Outlook on the web

Note: If the instructions don't match what you see, you might be using an older version of Outlook on the web. Try the Instructions for classic Outlookon the web.

  1. At the top of the page, select Settings Settings icon .

  2. In the Settings pane, move the Focused Inbox toggle to off.

  1. Select Settings Settings icon > Display settings > Focused Inbox.

  2. Under When email is received, select Don't sort messages.

  3. Click OK.

Outlook for Mac

  1. On the Organize tab, select Focused inbox.

    The Focused and Other tabs will disappear from the top of your mailbox.

Outlook Mobile

  1. Click the menu button at the top of your screen.

  2. Choose Settings button in Outlook Mobile .

  3. Use the Focused Inbox slider to turn Focused Inbox off.
